I am both a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a Licensed Professional Counselor. I received my Bachelor’s degree in

Psychology at the
University of Pittsburgh in 1993. I began seeing clients in 1996, while receiving my Masters Degree in Psychology and Marriage and Family Therapy at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California. After graduating with honors and at the top of my class, I moved back to the East Coast to continue my career.

My style in therapy is client-centered, solution-focused and cognitive-behavioral in nature. What this simply means is that you decide on your own goals, that I focus more on coming up with solutions to your dilemma’s that can help you fairly quickly in your day to day life rather than trying to uncover the root of the problem, and that it is my belief that many of our current struggles in daily life stem from what we tell ourselves and how we react to situations (our cognitions and behaviors). This does not mean that I don’t value your childhood or wish to explore it. I think that it definitely holds its place in how we came to be who we are and has shaped how we think, feel and act – and at times it will be important to discuss. Some people choose to enter therapy just to revisit old childhood wounds in order to more fully understand themselves, break repetitive patterns or to find peace with the past - and this is an admirable goal that I will support and assist. However, I have found that focusing on the present situation, and the current troublesome symptoms that bring you into therapy, leads to a quicker resolution bringing with it more fulfilling relationships and an easier day-to-day existence without having to spend years in therapy.

Over the years I have worked in a variety of treatment settings. While studying in California, I was a child therapist, family therapist, and individual therapist at an outpatient clinic, an elementary school, and on an inpatient psychiatric unit. It was also in California where I received specialized training and supervision as a play therapist and sand tray therapist, which has

remained a passion and specialty throughout my career. Since arriving in Philadelphia in 1998, I have worked as a therapist and clinical coordinator at a partial hospital program, provided in-home child therapy, family therapy, and behavior modification, and worked as a behavior specialist within the Philadelphia School District. While living briefly in Washington DC, serving as clinical director, I helped create from inception a community based mental health program for children and families. Lastly, I was the supervisor and program director of a local foster care program. After the birth of my first child, I decided to utilize all of my diverse work and life experiences providing individual, family, and child therapy in private practice.
